UBOD New Authors Named

The National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) and the Ateneo Institute for Literary Arts and Practices (AILAP) have finalized the list of accepted new authors for the project entitled UBOD: The New Authors Series II. This creative endeavor had its first inception back in 2005, when the chapbooks of forty (40) new authors from different parts of the country were launched at the Cultural Center of the Philippines.

For this year, fourteen (14) authors from different regions were chosen to have their literary works published as chapbooks. These new authors are: Sherma Espino Benosa (Short story, Iluko), Aida Campos Tiama (Poetry, Iluko), Christoffer Mitch Cerda (Short Story, Tagalog), Mar Anthony Simon dela Cruz (Short Story, Tagalog), Marlon Hacla (Poetry, Tagalog), Francisco Arias Montesena (Poetry, Tagalog), Jerome Hipolito (Poetry, Bikol), Adrian V. Remodo (Poetry, Bikol), Jay Gallera Malaga (Poetry, Hiligaynon), JV Perez (Short Story, Hiligaynon), Leonilo Lopido (Poetry, Waray), Phil Harold Mercurio (Poetry, Waray), Janis Claire B. Salvacion (Poetry, Waray), and Noel P. Tuazon (Poetry, Binisaya-Sugbuanon).

The authors were selected by a prestigious pool of readers/editors/translators and themselves, accomplished writers, such as, Cles Rambaud, Eli Rueda Guieb III, Michael M. Coroza, Kristian S. Cordero, Timothy R. Montes, John Iremil Teodoro and Merlie M. Alunan. Dr. Soledad Reyes will be the general editor of the collection. Details on the launching of the chapbooks are to follow.

The 9th Ateneo National Writers Workshop wil be held on Oct 19-22 at the Sacred Heart Novitiate in Novaliches, Quezon City.

Eight young writers from a total field of 79 applicants have been awarded fellowships which include board and lodging, a modest stipend, and the opportunity to learn from an esteemed panel of Atenean writers and critics. The fellows are:

For poetry in English: Gian-Paolo Simeon T. Lao (Ateneo de Manila University) and Patricia Angela F. Magno (Ateneo de Manila University); for poetry in Filipino: Marco Antonio R. Rodas (Enverga University) and Patrick Noah R. Bautista (University of the Philippines, Diliman); for fiction in English: Jenette Ethel N. Viscocho (University of the Philippines, Diliman) and Anne Carly Abad (Ateneo de Manila University); and for fiction in Filipino: Mark Benedict F. Lim (Ateneo de Manila University) and Joselito D. Delos Reyes (Philippine Normal University/ De La Salle University).

The workshop is organized by the Ateneo Institute of Literary Arts and Practices, headed officer-in-charge Asst. Professor Alvin B. Yapan, assisted by workshop director Asst. Instructor Yolando B. Jamendang of the Ateneo's Kagawaran ng Filipino.

The qualified languages are: Luzon (Tagalog, Bikolano, Ilokano,Kapampangan, Pangasinense), Visayas (Cebuano, Waray. Kinaray-a, Hiligaynon) and Mindanao (Maranao, Tausug, Magindanaon, Chavacano). The manuscript should be 40-60 pages in chapbook length. 20-40 poems or 5-10 short fiction. The most exceptional pieces in their manuscript shall be translated into Filipino or English.

Send two copies of the manuscript to the Ateneo Institute of Literary Arts and Practice (AILAP) c/o The Department of Filipino, 3rd Floor Dela Costa Bldg., School of Humanities, Ateneo de Manila University, Loyola Heights, Quezon City 1108. Include a CD of the manuscript and one page curriculum vitae with the author’s name, contact number and e-mail address and 1X1 picture.

The Ateneo Institute of Literary Arts and Practices (AILAP) is accepting applicants for the 9th Ateneo National Writers’ Workshop (ANWW) to be held from Oct. 19-22, 2009.

Each applicant should submit a portfolio in triplicate of any of the following: five poems, three short stories written in Filipino or English with a title page bearing the author’s pseudonym and a table of contents.

The portfolio must also be accompanied be a CD containing a file of the documents saved in MSWord or Rich Text format.

All submissions must include a sealed envelope containing the author’s name, address, contact number, e-mail address and a one-page resume including a literary CV with a 1X1 ID picture.
